Investigation may have uncovered identity theft

Some possible instances of identity theft have been discovered as the State Patrol continues to investigate Nebraskans that have illegally registered their cars in another state.
Col. Brian Tuma with the Nebraska State Patrol says some people may be using fake security numbers to register cars in other states and get away with it. He says that was discovered as the State Patrol investigated illegal vehicle registrations in the state.
“Early on in the investigation after letters went out we began receiving a number of calls very similar to what you just stated, I’ve never lived in Iowa, I’ve never been to Iowa, I’ve never owned a vehicle in Iowa and that’s when we began to discover their was a discrepancy with some of the Social Security numbers.”
