An accident in Beatrice Monday, resulted in the death of an 83-year-old former Beatrice City Councilman.
The victim was identified as Wayne Bitting, who served several terms as a member of the Beatrice City Council from the third ward.
Beatrice Police say an autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death. Police officer Jennifer Klaus says Bitting was the driver of a 1985 Ford pickup that was eastbound and struck a parked, 1999 Chevrolet pickup. The parked vehicle was along the south side of Court Street, next to the Brass Rail. Klaus said authorities are investigating whether Bitting may have suffered a seizure prior to the collision.
Bitting’s wife, 83-year-old Charlotte Bitting, suffered a broken arm and leg, and was airlifted by medical helicopter to a Lincoln hospital. The collision happened at three-55 p-m.
In addition to the parked truck, the collision damaged some vehicles owned by a nearby auto dealership.
Wayne Bitting served twelve years three terms, on the Beatrice City Council. He was the long time water superintendent for the city, before retiring.
