Tim Federowicz’s two-out, ninth-inning grand slam broke a 3-3 tie and second-seeded North Carolina advances with a 7-3 victory over seventh-seeded LSU at the Men’s College World Series Friday.
In the ninth, Ryan Graepel hit a one-out double into right center. Dustin Ackley, who was 4-for-4 in the game and has seven hits in the MCWS, was intentionally walked. A wild pitch put runners on second and third but a strikeout made two outs in the inning. LSU chose to walk Tim Fedroff to load the bases and Federowicz then sent a 1-1 pitch into the left field bleachers.
The win moves North Carolina to 53-13 overall and puts the Tar Heels in Saturday’s 6 p.m. game against Fresno State. LSU’s season ends at 49-19-1.
LSU cut into the lead in the second inning. Two walks to lead off the inning were followed by an RBI single up the middle by D.J. LeMahieu. A pop-up and a double play, however, ended the LSU threat.
North Carolina added a run in the fourth on an RBI groundout by Federowicz. LSU then tied the game in the sixth when Matt Clark belted a two-run home run into right, his 28th homer of the season.
