Charges from former press secretary Scott McClellan that the Bush White House manipulated sources of public opinion to the president’s advantage have drawn quick reaction. Nebraska U.S. Senator Chuck Hagel says that some of the criticisms in the book are ones that he previously voiced himself in connection with our involvmeny in the Iraq war. Fran Townsend, former head of the White House-based counterterrorism office, told CNN that the McClellan memoir is “self-serving, disingenuous and unprofessional.” Bush’s one-time top aide Karl Rove told Fox News Channel that McClellan wans’t an insider, but Senator Hagel questions how much more of an insider he could have been. McClellan talked to the media almost daily on the issue.
