Mavs advance to title game

The University of Nebraska at Omaha baseball team staved off elimination twice in the NCAA II Central Regional, defeating Minnesota State, Mankato, 6-5, then eliminating top-seeded Emporia State in a slugfest, 17-14, Saturday at Glennen Field.
No. 12 UNO (45-12) advances to the final day of the tournament, where it will face No. 23 Central Missouri at noon. UCM defeated Emporia State earlier in the day, 5-2, to go undefeated into the final game, meaning the Mavericks will have to defeat the Mules twice to repeat as regional champions. The second game would begin 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first.
Brian Goliber had three hits in the MSU game. After his first career triple, he scored on a sacrifice fly by Bryan Frew in the fourth. Then Goliber recorded the game-winning hit in the eighth with an RBI double, scoring Mat Eikmeier from first, who drove in a run with a fielder’s choice. Chris Weimer homered to lead off the third, his 21st of the year.
Senior hurler Tim Huber went the distance for the win, bettering his record to 9-1. Huber threw more than 130 pitches, allowing five runs on 12 hits, striking out four.
Weimer went 4-for-6 against the Hornets (50-10), including two more home runs, increasing his record total to 23. Dustin Koca opened the scoring for the Mavericks, blasting a three-run homer in the first, his 13th of the season. Brian Strawn hit his fourth homer of the year in the fourth, a two-run blast. Frew hit his 11th of the year, crushing a ball deep to right in the sixth.
The Mavericks banged out 19 total hits, to 12 for the Hornets. Matt DeGagne (5-1) earned the win, despite being charged with 11 earned runs. Wes Simmons turned in two and one-third strong innings of relief, before giving up a three-run homer to pinch hitter Nick Wolfe. Strawn moved from third base to the mound and allowed a single, but then ended the game by inducing a double play.
