A rough day for the UNO Mavericks baseball and softball team. The baseball team’s 18 game winning streak was snapped and the softball team’s 15 game win streak is done after they were swept by South Dakota in a double header.
In game one, UNO struggled at the plate, managing just four hits for the game. Leslie Svoboda’s first-inning RBI single gave the Mavs the lead, but USD tied knotted the game in the second and took the lead for good in the fourth when Mel Johnson sent a Beth Haley pitch over the centerfield fence in a 2-1 loss.
The Mavs continued their struggles in game two, as the Coyotes were able to keep them off the board until the final inning. Trailing by five runs UNO rallied in the seventh, pounding out four hits and pushing across three runs. USD held on for the 5-3 victory.
As far as the baseball team, Washburn (13-25), got a strong pitching performance from Jake Iverson, who held UNO (30-10) to just four hits after the first inning and struck out five Maverick batters.
Starter Ryan Hines (3-2), after a scoreless first inning, ran into second-inning troubles allowing four runs on four hits that gave the Ichabods all the offense they would need. Dustin Koca and Brian Strawn both produced RBIs in the first inning for the Mavericks.
