The Nebraska Legislative session ended this past week, but a committee of state lawmakers will be asked during the interim to conduct an investigation of the Beatrice State Developmental Center, and other state-run homes. Senator Norm Wallman of Cortland, whose district is home to the Beatrice State Developmental Center is one of the six state lawmakers on the special committee. Wallman says the commitee will deal with issues such as overtime and concerns by the department of justice. B-S-D-C has been threatened with the loss of some 29-million dollars in federal support, after inspections by the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid uncovered deficiencies.Those problems included some alleged cases of patient abuse. The special legislative committee will be chaired by Senator Steve Lathrop of Omaha. The vice-chairman will be Senator John Harms of Scottsbluff. Wallman says he expects the committee will forward recommendations for legislative consideration. The Beatrice State Developmental Center is undergoing a down-sizing expected to reduce the center?s client population from 300, to about 200 by the end of this year.
